Prof Dr Tunku Kamarul Zaman Tunku Zainol Abidin
President
Malaysian Orthopaedic Association 2022 – 2023
MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF THE MALAYSIAN ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATION

Welcome to Penang and to the 52nd MOA Annual Scientific Meeting 2023.

After battling the pandemic for almost 3 years, we are finally here to be able to have our meetings face to face without restrictions. It is good to be able to meet everyone, and in this case I really look forward to meeting friends from all over the country, and in fact from all over the world. I know that this year’s event will have great impact for those in attendance, and on behalf of MOA we welcome you to this meeting and we are extremely happy to have you here with us. As with our previous meetings, MOA provides a host of opportunities that would allow us to expand our knowledge and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues.

The hiatus in our annual meetings for the past 2 years have left us with a gap that can never be filled. During that time we have lost many friends and family, and in this meeting it is our hope that we would make time to meet our friends and to remember those that has passed on. Therefore, at MOA we felt that there is no better place to have this year’s meeting in the beautiful island of Penang, a historical heritage island of modern and old, with beautiful beaches and with many attractions to offer; not forgetting its diverse array of culinary delights. Penang being a place voted as one of the most sustainable, liveable and affordable places in the world was selected to provide a friendly, relaxed and stimulating environment that would help make the participants of this year’s ASM gain as much as possible from this meeting.

It is our mission that, in addition to helping make a difference in your practice and the care of patients through the many Instructional Course Lectures, symposia, and Specialty Day offerings; MOA ASM will provide more. And it is not just in academia and research. It is about the opportunity to embrace friendship and collegiality. We are also in the business that encourages and promotes good and ethical practices. This year, MOA’s theme being “enhancing recovery” provides a deeper meaning that just prescribing surgery and medicine to patients. It is about having to heal deep wounds and deep seated diseases such as unethical practices and poor decisions & actions. Coming to MOA would allow everyone to take part and make a difference. Being an ethical professional comes with the responsibility of treating everyone fairly, and there is no room for harassment and exploitation of any kind. MOA wholeheartedly embraces this concept and will uphold these values as much as possible. As orthopaedic surgeons, we take on challenging cases, complex fractures, and tough revisions. We do so with determination and resolve because we know the outcome depends on our efforts. The ongoing problems that we are facing requires this same dedication. Identifying effective remedies to both confront and eliminate deep seated issues requires leadership from all of us, so please do attend and show your commitment to uphold these values.

I wish to mention here that it has been my great honour to serve as your president, and I appreciate the tremendous effort done by the organizing committee in making this event a success. I also wish to thank the support I have received from the council, and our Society members; and whilst at the meeting, I do hope we will all have a fun time together.

Please enjoy the many opportunities available in this year’s conference, and thank you again for joining us in Penang.

Prof Datuk Dr Sabarul Afian Mokhtar

Organising Chairman
MESSAGE FROM ORGANISING CHAIRMAN OF THE 52ND MOA ASM 2023

Dear colleagues and friends,

“Mai lah Penang”

On behalf of the Malaysian Orthopaedics Association (MOA), I cordially invite you to the coming MOA 53rd Annual Scientific Meeting 2023 which will be held from 15th to 17th June 2023 at Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Penang, Malaysia.

We have chosen the theme “Enhancing Recovery In Orthopaedic Surgery” which will cover multimodal, multidisciplinary and evidence-based practices that promotes fast recovery and optimum outcome of treatment in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

Together with my Scientific Chair, Dr Shams Amir and the Scientific Committee, we are refreshing the MOA ASM programme and adding on new components such as MOA’s first ever Quiz Cup. The MOA Quiz Cup will see the start of what we hope will be a new tradition. I encourage our juniors to form their own teams and join this Quiz cup. A cash prize awaits the winning team!

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to submit their abstracts for the award competitions and free paper oral and poster presentations. We want to stimulate lively scientific discussions and offer the best oral and posters an opportunity to present their work in dedicated espresso sessions on day 3 of the meeting so watch this space.

Attendees can look forward to ICL format and case-based discussions during the symposiums. To enhance the programme, we are planning with the key industry partners to hold hands-on workshops throughout the meeting.

We have not forgotten the area of the conference where many of us spend our time during the ASM i.e. the industry exhibition area. Together with our conference organiser, the layout of the exhibition area have been thoughtfully formulated to allow our industry partners to showcase their newest technologies, pharmacological treatments and rehabilitation equipment. We have also come up with more ideas and channels for our industry partners to engage with our attendees.

Since we are in the heritage city of Penang, together with our local organising chairman, Dr Zairul Anuar and Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), we hope to bring a bit of Penang into our exhibition area, so do keep a look out for some surprising delights.

All in all, we have a few months of vigorous planning ahead of us to bring to everyone an MOA ASM unlike others before. I hope to see you and your family at this stimulating and rewarding meeting.
